A Salute to Our Military

Institute of Texan Cultures presents history of Texans on the battlefield

SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, May 25, Memorial Day Weekend, the Institute of Texan Cultures will present “A Salute to Our Military,” a living history program focusing on Texans in American military service, from Spanish Texas through today. Included in the price of regular admission, this outdoor event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Texas soldiers hold a critical position in the American military,” remarks Brandon Anioł, Educational Specialist at the Institute of Texan Cultures, “both historically and today. Memorial Day weekend provides people the opportunity to commemorate the gallant sacrifices of soldiers, on Texas soil and abroad.”

“A Salute to Our Military” will be held at the Institute of Texan Cultures Back 40 outdoor living history exhibit. Visitors are invited to explore an interactive timeline of Texans in American military service. Tactical vehicles and historic firearm demonstrations will offer an in depth look at how technology changed over time, informing life on and off the battlefield. Re-enactors and veterans will work together to recreate the unique culture of Texas military life. Veterans and visitors are invited to share their stories and experiences in the military.

“The combination of both veterans and re-enactors will help to reconstruct the landscape of history in a new and unique way.” Anioł contends. “This event attempts to recapture the grand scope of Texas involvement in American military service. The Institute of Texan Cultures is the only organization hosting an event this comprehensive and interactive this Memorial Day weekend. You do not want to miss this one.”

A Salute to the Military is included with regular admission.

The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults (ages 12-64); $7 for seniors (ages 65+); $6 for children (ages 3-11); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges identification.
