DANCE WITH THE DEAD

Institute of Texan Cultures invites guests to channel favorite departed Texans at Halloween masquerade dance

Tickets: 210-458-2269

SAN ANTONIO – Texas has seen its share of colorful and fascinating characters. The annals of Texas history are filled with heroes, villains and eccentrics. For the second year in a row, the Institute of Texan Cultures will host a Dance with the Dead, welcoming guests depicting the specters of Texas past.

Dance with the Dead is 8 to 11:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27. The 21 and over event encourages guests to dress as their favorite departed Texan or incorporate a Dia de los Muertos theme into their costumes. Guests will enjoy an evening of entertainment, including DJ and dancing, light snacks, and a cash bar.

"Part of the fun is talking to the other guests and learning about the people they’re portraying," said Lupita Barrera, director of education and interpretation at the museum. "You get to experience Texas in a very entertaining way."

At last year’s inaugural Dance with the Dead, a guest won the costume contest by portraying John Romulus Brinkley, a charlatan doctor who amassed a fortune in the 1930s. Other guests included outlaw turned lawyer John Wesley Hardin, Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith, Branch Davidian leader David Koresh, and crusading newsman Marvin Zindler.

In addition to the dance and costume contest, guests can participate in a ghost tour of the ITC, highlighting some of the places where alleged paranormal happenings have been reported.

Dance with the Dead admission is $20 in advance, $25 at the door and $15 for museum members or groups of 10 or more. Attendees must be 21 or over. For tickets, call 210-458-2269. The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk.
