Texas Trails & Tales

10:00 AM - 02:00 PM

Back 40

Costumed junior docents will lead the way for museum visitors as the Institute of Texan Cultures opens the re-creation period buildings of the Back 40 outdoor learning area: the one-room schoolhouse, frontier fort, adobe house, log house and barn. Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Included with regular admission.

Trail bosses, pioneers and U.S. Cavalry soldiers are ready to lead guests across the Texas Frontier for the Texas Trails & Tales summer season.

Explore 1800s Texas and the daily lives of early settlers on the frontier. Activities include daily take-home crafts. Take lessons in the one-room school house, then enjoy schoolyard games. Make paper flowers at the adobe house. Enlist in the cavalry and study map reading at the fort. Wash clothes with homemade soap at the log house.

Texas Trails & Tales is held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 18 to July 27. Texas Trails & Tales activities will be suspended on July 4. The program is included with regular admission.

NOTE: While Texas Trails & Tales is not a structured summer camp, counselor-led recreational programs and families are gladly welcomed to take a tour or explore on their own.
