Faces with Names Project Online

UTSA, Institute of Texan Cultures make volunteer project available to the public

SAN ANTONIO – In 2012, a group of San Antonio volunteers completed an extensive three-year effort to gather images of all San Antonio-area Vietnam casualties. Thanks to the heroic efforts of the volunteer committee, the "Faces with Names" project gathered more than 300 images of San Antonians lost in Vietnam, and this Veteran’s Day, the archive is being made available online.

The Faces with Names project has compiled the San Antonio-area images at utsa.edu/faceswithnames. The micro-site now houses the 300-plus images, along with a narrative of how the committee members went about conducting their research and discovery of images.

Called for by Peter Holt and executed by a volunteer committee selected by UTSA President Ricardo Romo, Faces with Names was a localization of a national project aimed at gathering images of all Vietnam War casualties for the "National Education Center at The Wall."

In May 2012, as Memorial Day closed in, the volunteer committee submitted their nearly completed project to the education center for inclusion on the "virtual wall," housed at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund website, VVMF.org. Locally, the Institute of Texan Cultures serves as a curator and repository of the completed San Antonio Faces with Names project.

The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults (ages 12-64); $7 for seniors (ages 65+); $6 for children (ages 3-11); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges identification.
