Seeking photos to honor San Antonio Servicemen Killed in Vietnam

The Institute of Texan Cultures is gathering images to honor servicemen from San Antonio and the surrounding community who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War.

The Faces with Names project is a local effort focusing on San Antonio and Bexar County, where an estimated 340 soldiers did not come home. Their names are among more than 58,000 recorded on The Wall.

The Institute of Texan Cultures will serve as a central gathering point for images from the Bexar County area. The pictures collected will be sent to the Education Center at The Wall, a forthcoming museum and visitor center planned to accompany the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Its mission is to help visitors understand the courage, sacrifice and devotion of those who fell, those who returned, and those who waited.

The names cut in the smooth black granite are faceless; they have no context, no connection. Visitors to the education center will be able to better understand the profound impact the Vietnam War had on their family members, their home towns, their communities and the nation.

Visit www.buildthecenter.org to learn more about what the Education Center will contain, what work remains to be done and how photos will be used.
