For decades, the start of the holiday season in San Antonio was signaled by the arrival of Santa at Joske’s department store. Seated in Fantasyland castle, thousands of area children shared their wishes with him as they marveled at the wonder of his elaborate land.

 

Founded by German immigrant Julius Joske in 1867, the store offered this holiday delight annually from 1960 until their closing in 1987. The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will offer a peek into this treasured holiday tradition through a display of historic photos. This nostalgic journey will revive memories of family pilgrimages to experience the joy of the season which visitors can then share with others.
