Call for Volunteers

Texas Folklife Festival asks community to "Get your Texas on!"

SAN ANTONIO – For 44 years, the Texas Folklife Festival has captured the living culture and history of the state of Texas, and placed it on display for the entire state to see. With the festival dates, June 13 and 14, quickly approaching, the festival office is calling on the community for volunteers to help staff festival positions.

"Folklife has always been a festival about people," said Jo Ann Andera. "What could be more Texan than everyday people stepping in, showing pride in their culture and community? It’s these volunteers who make Folklife possible and make it so amazing to stage every year."

Andera mentioned families, church groups and service organizations that often volunteer together as gate teams, taking tickets and sorting pre-purchase tickets from gate admission tickets to speed up the process. She spoke about volunteers who’ve worked in the same position for 10 to 20 years.

Volunteers are needed for way-finding, room and hall monitors, setup and takedown, office and phone support, elevator monitors, dressing room monitors and a variety of other positions. Volunteers receive an entry wristband for both days and a parking pass and free shuttle to and from the Festival.

New and returning volunteers are asked to visit TexanCultures.com/volunteer to register in the festival’s online volunteer system. Orientation sessions are Wednesday, May 20, 6:00 p.m., and Wednesday, May 27, 6 p.m., at the museum. Volunteer packets, including wristbands and parking passes will be distributed at these sessions.

"Around the office, we’ve been saying, it’s time to ‘Get your Texas on!’" said Andera. "Texas means ‘friendship’ and lending a hand. We’re asking our great community to help make Folklife a great experience for everyone."

The Texas Folklife Festival is 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, June 13; and noon to 7 p.m., Sunday, June 14 at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures, 801 E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. VIA Park & Ride service is available from Crossroads. For ticket information, visit TexasFolklifeFestival.org or call 210-458-2300.
