SAN ANTONIO – San Antonians will welcome hundreds of traveling guests and family members during the holiday season. In days often filled with activities and adventures throughout the city, the Institute of Texan Cultures is always a great destination. With a compelling story and a series of activities planned, the museum is preparing for the holiday season.
December begins with three big events, each offering a free admission opportunity.
"Toy Day" is December 6, offering free admission to any visitor bringing a new, unwrapped toy to benefit the San Antonio Fire Department.
"We began this tradition four years ago, when we hosted the Timeless Texas Toys exhibit and we’ve continued ever since," said Aaron Parks, ITC assistant director. "We continue to support the San Antonio Fire Department and offer a day of fun and entertainment for anyone supporting the SAFD effort."
The second week sees two free admission opportunities, with a San Antonio Food Bank partner event on December 13 and the museum’s regular Second Sunday on December 14.
December 13, any guest bringing a food item from the Food Bank’s "12 Most Wanted" list will receive free admission to the "Healthy Holiday" program, with cooking demonstrations, tips on food choices and strategies to remaining healthy during the holiday.
December 14, the museum will host its monthly Free Second Sunday, featuring the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church troupe putting on "Los Pastores," a traditional folk play, presented during the holiday season. The day begins with a workshop teaching songs from the play, and the opportunity to make props used in the play, such as angel crowns and devil masks.
"Whether participating in one of the museum’s activity days or visiting the new exhibits, the Institute of Texan Cultures is a fantastic place to bring family during the break," said Parks.
The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults (ages 12-64); $7 for seniors (ages 65+); $6 for children (ages 3-11); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges identification.
