Institute of Texan Cultures partners with San Antonio Council for International Visitors

SAN ANTONIO – The Institute of Texan Cultures recently entered an agreement with the San Antonio Council for International Visitors, creating reciprocal memberships for each organization. The council is charged with arranging programming and hospitality for visiting dignitaries selected by the U. S. State Department.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for both of our organizations,” said Angelica Docog, executive director of the Institute of Texan Cultures. “When we show a visitor how his or her culture has helped build this state, we create an immediate bond. We want to show that this state is diverse, open and hospitable to other cultures and that we look forward to building prosperity together.”

The main exhibit floor showcases more than 20 cultures’ contributions to Texas and documents their folkways, traditions and customs. Stories of prominent individuals cover the walls, detailing the establishment of businesses, trade routes and other adventures of discovery.

“This is the appropriate venue,” said Docog. “We hold naturalization ceremonies here. Toyota announced its entry into San Antonio from our exhibit floor. This museum reminds locals and newcomers alike that the work of immigrants, foreign business and cultural exchanges can blossom into prosperous and meaningful relationships for our city and beyond.”

According to the San Antonio Council for International Visitors, hundreds of international visitors come on official business each year to foster economic development and cross-cultural understanding. In addition to their interactions with area professionals and visits to destinations such as the Institute of Texan Cultures, international guests are treated to hospitality in the homes of council members, offering invaluable first-hand experience with everyday American life.

The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA HemisFair Park Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $8 for adults (ages 12-64); $7 for seniors (ages 65+); $6 for children (ages 3-11); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges identification.
