January 2016 Accomplishments

Community Input: The Institute of Texan Cultures hosted a community input meeting to gather ideas for updating the content of the African-American area on the main exhibit floor. Additional meetings are planned for Austin, Houston and Dallas.

On my Honor: A museum representative was invited to give a "what’s new at the ITC" presentation for the San Antonio Area Eagle Scout Alumni Association.

Free Second Sunday: January’s Free Second Sunday, "Texan Cultures Between the Pages" featured author Gene Fowler, offering readings from his book, "Mavericks: A Gallery of Texas Characters." More than 300 attended. Fowler got to discuss his work with Texas Public Radio and KKYX radio.

Connect with the STAAR: The Education and Interpretation department hosted its fourth annual STAAR testing preparation workshop for area teachers, discussing strategies that promote student success. The teachers will be able to implement these techniques in the classroom to boost student performance on the annual standardized tests.

Native Americans in Texas: A Tale of Two Cultures": The museum has started offering its second distance learning program. Geared toward grades 3 to 7, the session uses images and artifacts to challenge students to compare and contrast Caddo and Apache cultures and see how the natural environment affected how these cultures developed.

Welcome to the team: Mckenzie Radzik has joined the Education and Interpretation department as an intern. Research, Exhibits and Collections welcomed interns Tanner Norwood, Rachel Sengele and Briana Miano

Networking: Museum personnel attended a variety of events throughout the community, making contacts and discussing recent accomplishments. A group attended the La Prensa Foundation’s Civic Leadership Awards gala, held in partnership with the Alamo Colleges Workforce Center for Excellence. Educators also attended a UTSA "speed networking" luncheon to discuss current projects with faculty members and determine any areas where the museum could collaborate with the university.
