Creation and Cosmos

Creation and Cosmos explores the spirituality of creation and the search for a place in the cosmos of a variety of Native American peoples.

The indigenous Americans infused their beliefs into everyday artifacts such as clay pots and other ceramic vessels. In these decorated artifacts one can find allusions to religious beliefs, practices, cosmology, and ideas about the world and its origins.

Creation and Cosmos beckons guests to explore a thousand years of Native American spiritualism in the dark caves of the exhibit. Artifacts used to contain or serve foods or beverages also serve, in given contexts, as a means to communicate relations of power within a society, often illuminating differences in gender, status, or social and political affiliation.

An examination of the artifacts helps bring the beliefs of Native Americans to life. Creation and Cosmos will guide you in deciphering their varied meanings.

Creation and Cosmos is an exclusive exhibit of UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures.
