The Vault

Take a closer look at the Institute of Texan Cultures's Collections online!
The online artifact of the month feature is another way we serve as public stewards and educators. We give patrons an inside look to our collections, many of which are not often on the Exhibit Floor.

Our collections have a variety of two- and three-dimensional objects that reflect Texas’s cultural heritage. These photographs, documents, and other items add tactile detail to our shared history. Each month, we feature an artifact that reflects a particular historical event, celebration or theme.

Fraternal Ribbon, 1902
Gift of Mrs. Edward L. Diaz, Sr.
San Antonio, Texas

Benito Juarez Fraternal Ribbon

Sociedad Benito Juarez, the namesake for Benito Juarez , Mexico’s first Zapotecan President (March 21, 1806 – July, 18 1872), upheld the ideals of Juarez’s La Reforma, which implemented progressive reform and equality for all Mexicans. Juarez‘s death left a vulnerable country in turmoil and thousands of Mexicans fled Porfirio Diaz’s regime and crossed into Texas.
Members of the Sociedad Benito Juarez in Pearsall, Texas, wore a fraternal ribbon which paid tribute to Juarez. The society’s fraternal ribbon features a cameo picture of Benito Juarez and the handshake symbol to reflect the political sentiment before the Mexican Revolution of 1910.
