Lone Star & Eagle

May 29 - Sept. 19, 2010

The Institute of Texan Cultures will showcase the Humanities Texas exhibit Lone Star & Eagle, an exploration of German immigration to Texas. The exhibit takes its name from the iconic images of Texas and German heraldry.

German Texans began to arrive in the 1840s. Their ventures into Texas were marred by financial mismanagement and disreputable businessmen. The Fischer-Miller land grant, which was where many Germans settled, was Comanche territory and nearly uninhabitable, however an unbroken treaty paved the way for establishing communities including Fredericksburg, New Braunfels and Sisterdale.

The exhibit will include reproductions of archive photographs, newspaper headlines and paintings. The institute contributed archival images to the development of this project.

German-English School
The German-English School at San Antonio was ranked among one of the outstanding educational institutions in the state of Texas in the late 1800s. Parents from across the state would send their children to San Antonio to attend classes, which were taught in German and English and included rigorous coursework. The school did not have a religious affiliation during its 40-year history.

Loesscher Band of Cat Spring
German bands often played traditional and polka music to celebrate Maifest, harvest festivals, and family centered celebrations.
