TUSKS! Ice Age Mammoths and Mastodons
Sept. 12, 2009 – Jan. 3, 2010

TUSKS! Ice Age Mammoths and Mastodons is a traveling exhibit created by the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Fla. The exhibit features 80 fossil specimens, replicas and artifacts, along with graphic panels, murals and interactive video modules.

These extinct relatives of modern elephants roamed much of North America, including what would become Texas, until the end of the last Ice Age, 11,000 years ago. TUSKS! tells the story of these creatures and some of their close relatives such as horses, giant ground sloths and armadillos, and some carnivores, as revealed by fossil discoveries and paleontological study. A supplement to the exhibit will expose guests to extinct species in Texas and the Paleoindians who hunted them.

Visitors can experience the scientific method with hands-on activities in the Texas Archaeology Lab. They will learn how to study bones, analyze and catalog artifacts, and use math and science skills to form their interpretations.

Special events are planned to celebrate Texas Archaeology Month in October. A complete schedule, pre-visit lessons and downloadable activities will be posted prior to the exhibit opening.

Craft Days: The second and fourth Saturdays of each month, 12 – 2 p.m.

Archaeology Day: Nov. 7, with guest speaker Alston Thoms and a variety of
hands-on activities
