(SAN ANTONIO) – On April 6, 2018, San Antonio will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the event that launched its modern era: HemisFair 1968. The sanctioned World’s Fair, celebrating the city’s 250th anniversary, drew together the many civilizations of the Americas and beyond, and helped show their connections to Texas.

To prepare for this anniversary, the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures is seeking personal photos, home videos, and memories from the event. People interested in contributing remembrances are encouraged to contact with details on what images, film footage or anecdotes they can share.

"There are fantastic events and exhibits coming up regarding HemisFair," said Sarah Gould, lead curatorial researcher at the institute. "We want to present this in a different way, by making it personal and relatable. We look forward to sharing in these amazing memories from 50 years ago."

After reviewing submissions, the institute’s team will make contact to acquire images or footage, and advise on scanning photos, digitizing video, or recording anecdotes for the oral history collection.

Researchers are focusing on stories from people who attended the event, rather than souvenirs and objects. The institute’s team wants to see HemisFair ’68 from personal points of view.

"We have hundreds of official photographs documenting HemisFair, but they’re institutional and taken with a documentarian’s eye," said Gould. "We want to see the fair from visitors’ points of view. We want to know what areas of the fair visitors were drawn to and what they highlighted in their photos and home movies. We want to see their memories of visiting or working the grounds. We will use these photos and films to create a compilation video of HemisFair through the eyes of everyday people who witnessed something extraordinary. This will be included in our 50th anniversary exhibit this April."
