Spring docent class forming at UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures is recruiting volunteers for its spring 2016 docent class. The museum is preparing to train tour guides and museum interpreters to serve as stewards of Texas heritage, leading tours and interpreting museum exhibits and artifacts.

"The volunteers here at the Institute are phenomenal people," said Alexandra Zuzula, manager of the museum’s volunteer program. "These are community members who have chosen to spend their time teaching students and museum visitors about Texas’ many cultures.  Our volunteers bring stories to life. They have one of the most important roles at the museum."

Tour guides keep the museum moving. As a popular destination, state-wide, for school field trips and adult tours, the guides help groups navigate the museum’s exhibits while connecting the cultural groups represented.

Museum interpreters enrich exhibits such as the chuck wagon and the sharecropper cabin. With costumes, hands-on demonstrations, objects and settings, an interpreter can transform a group’s experience. Interpreters also enliven the Institute’s Back 40 outdoor living history exhibit, which showcases replica buildings found across Texas from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries.

Spring docent orientation meets Feb. 22, 24 and 26. Volunteers will receive training in museum interpretation and teaching techniques for various age groups. They will meet the museum’s staff and the growing group of museum volunteers currently serving at the institute.

To apply, contact the Manager of Volunteer Services at 210-458-2226 or ITCvolunteers@utsa.edu.  A written application, interview, and background check are required to attend orientation.

The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA Hemisfair Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk. Regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Saturday; noon-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 210-458-2300 or visit TexanCultures.com.
