(SAN ANTONIO) – In 2017, the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures hosted its inaugural Texas Star Heritage Award & GalaTM, honoring Texans who have made fantastic impacts on heritage, culture and diversity. As the gala enters its second year and marks the museum’s 50th anniversary and San Antonio’s Tricentennial, the museum calls for nominees for the 2018 Texas Star Heritage Awards.

Nomination forms are available online at TexanCultures.com/gala, along with profiles on the 2017 recipients, G.P. Singh of the Sikh community, Janie Barrera of LiftFund, and OCI Group (Our Community, Inc.). The nomination deadline is April 3.

Nominees will be accepted in three categories: Local impact (San Antonio area), regional impact (outside of San Antonio and at national levels) and Business or Organization (corporate, nonprofit, etc.). Nominees will have demonstrated a commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, championing education, and promoting diversity, in line with the museum’s mission and core values.

"Identifying and awarding exemplary Texans for their work was the right way to open the new era for the Institute of Texan Cultures," said Angelica Docog, the museum’s executive director. "The people we held up as exemplars of Texas culture have demonstrated the necessity of a global outlook in today’s world. Texans who have been the voice for ethnic communities, who have preserved histories of a people’s journey to Texas, and people who have reminded us of the interconnected nature of today’s society – these are the individuals we wish to honor with the Texas Star Heritage Award."

A panel of five judges will score the nominees and announce the 2018 recipients by September 2017.

"As we celebrate these significant milestones for San Antonio, we will honor those who exemplify the values we hold dear as Texans," said Docog. "It is the many great people, civic-minded and engaged in the community, who have truly built Texas. They typify good citizenship."

The Institute of Texan Cultures is located on the UTSA Hemisfair Campus, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., a short distance from the Alamo and the River Walk. The 2018 Texas Star Heritage Awards will be held Saturday, January 20, 2018. For more information, call 210-458-2300 or visit TexanCultures.com.
