For many people, it seems like it was just yesterday when the World’s Fair was held in San Antonio in 1968. HemisFair Park and the Tower of the Americas were built especially for the celebration, and the Institute of Texan Cultures was established as the Texas Pavilion. For the last 38 years, the Institute’s mission has been to showcase the diverse cultures of the state’s original settlers—the Germans, the Norwegians, the Chinese and many other cultures.

This platform was a perfect reason to create the annual Texas Folklife Festival which celebrates these ethnic groups and helps to preserve the rich cultural traditions like making lace, wood carving, making Czech kolaches, Polish pierogi, German sauerkraut, the Chinese Lion dance, the Lebanese folk dances and many more. These elements of the Texas Folklife Festival appeal to each of us in a special way that takes us back to our childhood.

With this year’s 35th anniversary, we have selected photographs from the archives that represent the decades—the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. And while much has visibly changed, much has also remained the same. We welcome you and your family and friends to revisit your past and embrace your future at the 35th anniversary celebration of the Texas Folklife Festival, June 8 – 11.
