The Chinese had some fears that after the establishment of the People’s Republic, the United States would be drawn into war with China. What was in some minds was the treatment of Japanese citizens of the United States at the start of World War II:

"There are some who are fearful if the United States should ever go to war with Red China they would be shuttled away to camps as the Japanese were early in World War II. . . . That is one reason we have to work harder to show we are good Americans, so if we ever do go to war with Communist China, such a thing will not enter the minds of other Americans."
