Elizabeth Chao came from Taiwan in the 1970s and was very clear as to why:

"It’s too crowded in Taiwan. There’s not much future for our generation in Taiwan, as far as a career is concerned. If you are an important person’s son, you’ll get places. Otherwise, you’re just working day to day, getting nowhere. Here there is equal opportunity for everyone. I really believe that."
